The flag for bursars is flying high and the wind is blowing through its fabrics, making it clear for all to see.
It seems the message that schools need good business management is being heard throughout the halls of government.
At the launch today of the BESA Policy Commission 2008 investigation into the changing face of education, Charles Clarke MP discussed the findings of many months research.
He raised some crucial points that need to be addressed in schools, and was keen to point out that he had no ‘silver bullet' for success and that the report would act as a catalyst to move change forward.
However, the underlying terminology of the launch revolved around teachers and how they need increased training and support to make informed decisions on product evaluation and procurement.
Concerned by the lack of mention of SBMs and bursars, I asked Clarke what he considered your role in this progressive movement.
I was delighted to hear that he had not overlooked the importance of good business management. He said that he thought bursars played an important role in schools and that schools required better management of this kind.
"We need people in schools with better bursarial skills as bursars make a large contribution to the running of schools," concluded Clarke, to which I had to nod in agreement.
