BETT Thoughts

Released 14/01/2010

Suzannah Wright shares her thoughts on day two of BETT 2010

As we edge towards the halfway point of BETT 2010, I thought I'd share, in  no particular order, a selection of the thoughts, interesting ideas and discussions I've overheard over the last two days.

  • Money, or lack thereof, is obviously a big talking point. As you might expect, the exhibitors are keen to discuss how their products can save money in the longterm, but a lot of what they are saying makes sense. Invest in some sort of durable thin client and reduce annual hardware costs, for example.
  • Online assessment is a being discussed in various ways - one interesting point is the need for schools to consider how they might provide large formal exams if these were carried out online: do you have enough devices to fill an examination hall? Could you rent them for the exam period?
  • Partnerships and interoperability are big themes this year as they were last. Promethean, for example, were keen to stress how their response systems can be used with any board - going so far as to use a SMARTboard on their stand. In other areas collaboration between software and hardware providers or links between software systems should make it easier for schools to integrate and streamline their ICT.
  • But some attendees are keen to move on from IWBs and towards other forms of interactivity...what do you think, are IWBs too last year to mention?
