Hi, I am a long time reader, first time poster...
We offer a wide range of food in our canteen, but the kids seem adament to go off site at lunch time... we are discussing locking the gates at lunch time.
I know this sounds extreme, I was just wondering what other peoples experiences where.
Thanks

We have recently run our second ‘Serving Them Right’ conference looking at this very issue; how to increase the uptake of school meals? Is the only fail proof way to guarantee feeding mouths locking gates? Here at St. Aidan’s we have shown that there is a better way; keep the gates open and serve nutritious, wholesome food Seven years ago we brought the catering in-house and our experience has developed to such an extent that we created a website ‘catering4schools.com’. This is a live database with fully compliant primary school menus which would be perfect for your school. With over 400 recipes that can be tailor made to the number of portions you are serving there are plenty of options to choose from. The schools that are using it love it. If you want a free demonstration, please see the website.

Geoff - We are facing similar issues but I dont think locking the school gates would be practical! We saw on programs that certain parents wouldnt see this as a barrier to feeding their children unhealthy food.
Thanks for the information Claire this is very useful. I will check out the site, and get back to you on here!

Clare, that sounds really interesting I will take a look.
We have decided on the whole we cant lock the gates at lunch times... We are just going to concentrate on making our food offerings as attractive as possible, and incentivising the kids.
This is the only way we can see forward, god help my budgets!
Thanks
G
