Leicester College's new Abbey Park campus is to benefit from the installation of a wind turbine.
The college decided to pioneer the new building as a beacon of environmentalism, with the new turbine situated aloft a sculpted, twisted tower design so as to not be an eyesore and will help power the building when it opens its doors to students this September.
Leicester College committed to making environmental sustainability a guiding principle by signing the Association of Colleges (AoC) Green Declaration made at a joint conference of AoC and the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) on 1 April 2008.
The declaration requires colleges to ensure prudent use of resources, introduce environmental standards in business design, develop safe, green and accessible routes to college and incorporate sustainability into the curriculum where possible.
A college spokesperson said; "Leicester College is taking the lead by building this new campus powered by wind turbine technology. Only 30 per cent of UK colleges have signed the Green Declaration so far, so our commitment to implementing environmentally sustainable practices hasn't been taken lightly."
"We hope that by leading the way with initiatives such as the Abbey Park accommodation project, this will encourage other organisations in the region to do what they can to reduce their carbon footprint," they continued.
