The closure of a deaf support centre has been praised, as long as the money for deaf work remains in place.
The Monkhouse Deaf Support Centre in Tyneside, is to close in September, with North Tyneside council saying that it is good news as it means that deaf children are now integrating into mainstream schools.
The council claim that more parents are choosing mainstream school for their hearing impaired children, but Alison Lawson, north east regional director of the National Deaf Children's Society, said that the closure should only be welcomed if the correct funding is given to integration.
"Being the only deaf child in a school can be very isolating, there can be problems with communication, especially if the support isn't there," she said.
"We hope the council is successful in helping more deaf children in mainstream schools and ensuring that the finances are in place," continued Lawson.
