Struggling schools could lose specialist status

Struggling schools face losing their specialist status unless they improve, according to the Times.

The news could affect National Challenge schools that fail to meet the benchmark target of 30 per cent pass rate in five GCSEs.

Around 70 per cent of the schools named in the National Challenge hold specialist status.

The DCSF have denied the newspaper's claims that the school status is in jeopardy.

"They will retain their specialist status and the associated funding and will also benefit from the wider support available to all schools below the floor target through the National Challenge," said the DCSF.
