A new online recruitment tool is being developed, announced the DCSF.
Due to launch early next year, the online Schools Recruitment Service is being developed to provide a better process for recruiting permanent teaching and support staff.
Devised by the DCSF in partnership with schools, LAs and suppliers, the service uses the latest online applicant tracking technology.
This offers better market and media intelligence; better matching of candidates to jobs; savings to schools and local authorities on time, resources and money; and better all-round service for applicants - efficient, user-friendly and standardised.
The DCSF is funding the costs for the first six months and contributing substantially to the costs of the service for a further maximum of 18 months.
This will most benefit schools and LAs which adopt the system early on.
Schools minister Jim Knight said: "The provision of an outstanding workforce is a crucial factor in delivering a world class education system for our children."
"With around 150,000 teaching vacancies per year in English schools, this represents a mammoth challenge for local authorities and schools."
"The new Schools Recruitment Service can provide them with invaluable support in this area, enabling them to recruit both teaching and support staff more effectively and efficiently while making savings on time, resources and money," said Knight.
