New centre to offer vocational learning courses

A new £6.5m college has opened in the North East, offering vocational-based education on subjects including childcare, health and social care, ICT and travel and tourism.

St Peter's Sixth Form College is located on the banks of the River Wear, next to the University of Sunderland.

Over 500 students have already moved to St Peter's, which forms part of a major estates programme at the college.

Head of Sixth Form at St Peter's John Anderson said: "We wanted to create an atmosphere which is the perfect balance between the traditional sixth form offering and state-of-the-art facilities. And, by working closely with local schools on an ongoing basis, we can ensure that we tailor our provision to meet the needs of local young people for many years to come."

John Mallett, Chair of the Governors of Sunderland College, said: "We have worked with the University of Sunderland as a strategic partner for many years and the proximity of the site will give the new building a real ‘campus feel' and will help to prepare our students for university life."
