Awards for outdoor learning

Nominations for learning outdoors award

Schools, early years settings and youth organisations have been encouraged to enter the 2009 Learning Outside the Classroom Awards, which recognise the innovative use of learning outside the classroom and demonstrate the benefits of getting children out and about.

The Awards are organised by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom and provide the perfect opportunity for educational centres to showcase exciting and inspiring activities taking place in the school grounds, local environment or further afield. Judges will be looking for shining examples of institutions that place learning outside the classroom at the heart of what they do. The deadline for entries is the 17th July.

Beth Gardner, chief executive of the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom said: "Getting out and about should be a vital part of every child's school life as the classroom environment doesn't always provide young people with the real world experiences they need.

"These Awards showcase the benefits of learning outside the classroom -  engaging in hands-on activities excites and motivates young people whilst teaching them about the wider world. I would urge anyone who works with children to visit www.lotc.org.uk and download the nomination form."

The inaugural Awards in 2008 saw Castlechurch Primary take the crown as national champion for its dedication to placing learning outside the classroom at the heart of its curriculum. Through regular educational visits and the use of its own grounds, the Stafford school's commitment to learning outside the classroom has had real impacts on pupils' attainment in literacy, maths and science.

The Awards are open to all schools and educational establishments (including youth organisations). Nominations may be made by Local Authorities, learning outside the classroom providers (i.e. museums, farms, activity centres, etc.) and schools and other establishments themselves. There are nine regional awards and one national award. The regional awards cover each of the nine English regions. The winners of the regional awards will compete for the National Learning Outside the Classroom Award 2009 to be presented at the LOtC Annual Conference on 3 December 2009.
